Charlotte Charter Schools

While they originally started in the early 1990′s in Minnesota, charter schools have become very popular in Charlotte NC.  They are independently operated public schools.  The purpose behind Charter Schools is to serve as a laboratory, of sorts, for approaching education from different angles, with fewer rules and regulations to govern specific methods.  They are completely created and run by parents, teachers, and/or community leaders.  While they receive the same funding as public schools, there are less restrictions on  how the school is run, enabling more freedom for the administrators, as well as the teachers.  These schools must be approved by the NC Board of Education before they can open.  Additionally they are subject to reviews ensuring that certain guidelines are being met.

Charter schools in North Carolina admit students through a lottery. While location is not as big of a factor admission to Charlotte charter schools, you will want to research the public schools your new home is zoned for in case your child is not admitted through the lottery their first year.

Public Schools

Public School Systems in North Carolina have been encouraged by the state to consolidate.  Thus many counties operate a single system, although there are areas (Mooresville, for example) that remain independent.  Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is the largest system in the Carolinas, with over 128,000 students enrolled in various programs, including college prep, magnets, academically gifted, and technical.  CMS also offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, AP courses, and Magnet Programs – where specific schools focus on specialized areas such as foreign languages, sciences, or visual & performing arts.
